‘This is all about fun’ – how the Punjabi Villans are bringing joy to match days
The latest match day at Villa Park took a rather unique turn. Instead of weaving through Birmingham City Centre, parking up in the press car park at Brookvale and embarking on the all-too-familiar journey past Witton Train Station, the Witton Arms and into a sea of claret and blue heading towards Villa Park, I decided to take the scenic route into the ground before Aston Villa’s late collapse against Tottenham Hotspur.
Storm Dennis had caused severe disruption around B6 but this detour was not enforced by the adverse weather conditions.
The Punjabi Villans — a wonderfully entertaining and affable supporters’ group, who warmed hearts when they were filmed dancing, singing and exchanging friendly banter outside Wembley with rival Derby County fans before last season’s play-off final win — hosted the Punjabi Spurs before the game in nearby Handsworth and The Athletic were invited to join in the fun.
